I use those hides and really like them but haven't had any issues like that. I think if you washed them good they would be fine. The problem I've had with some of mine was on the inside I found some very sharp points and edges from the molding process and I took a dremel tool to them and smoothed them down so there were no sharp places on the inside. I just ordered a copy of my ball's favorite hide, since he decided that the free ones that I got were not good enough. It's an exo terra large rock hide (http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products/reptile_cave.php). When I pulled it out of the box, it's much brighter than the one he has. I washed it for good measure, but as I was drying it, I noticed that some of the color was rubbing off onto the towel. Is this ok? I have to rub pretty hard to get it off, but the hide does have a little of that new stain / paint smell. I just want to make sure this is all fine before I put it in his cage.
