bitey/non bitey snake species
There was a question in another thread as to whether BPs were the snake least likely to bite. There were a few responses, including my own, but I realized we were off topic. So I decided to start a new thread. What species is on the top of your list for biters/non-biters. I put BP and SST on the top of the non-biter list. The unchallenged champion of my biters list is the viper boa. I kept these many years ago and my mere presence in the snake room was enough to send the female into a biting frenzy. I was afraid she was going to hurt herself whacking against the front of her cage try to nail me from across the room. Not sure I ever entered her enclosure without her taking her best shot! The male was much calmer, he only went into a biting frenzy when his enclosure was opened.

I'd put Royals at the top of the non-biters or unlikely to bite list as well .

Re: bitey/non bitey snake species
Here is my list. I have personally owned many different animals of each species listed and still have balls, hogs, corns and ksbs.
Non bitey: balls, western Hognoses
Will bite you but don't really want to: burms, corns, Kenyan sand boas
Bitey:? Idk, never had any I thought were especially bitey
I have never been bit by a Hognose, but I have been bit by the other species in my list at least a few times.

This isn't going to work the way you expect. Most "bitey" animals are made up of mostly wild caught specimens. How would you not expect an animal that's lived its entire life avoiding being grabbed by something to not get defensive when you try to grab it?

All animals have the chance to be "bitey". Too many factors to really take in like like wild caught, personality, how it was raised etc. If being very general, I would say balls and bci are pretty mellow. Now as for an example, my ball bit anyone who picked her up as a baby except me. No one liked to handle her cause of the fact she would always try to bite but like I said, I picked her up and she has never made any attempt to bite me or anything and I've had her just over a year now. Bottom line every animal is going to be different. I've even heard of people with anacondas that were puppy dog tame and they are known for being rather ill tempered.

I've read some iffy things about Hognoses . Whist being one of the CUTEST looking snakes around , aren't they are known to bluff-bite , kinda pretend to - but don't usually bite ??
Trouble is with them is when they bite , they apparently go for it big-time ......and they are rear-fanged and , as such , are mildly venomous which can be an issue for sensitive people like myself .

as babies, my balls were nippy but they outgrew that quickly. its a rare case in my snakes that they didnt outgrow it (Thor >: ( )
hognoses seem to just be hungry all the time, and i need to tap them to let them know, no its not feeding time, dont eat me. after that, they're sweet as pie, Except a large male that struck every chance he got.
my Irian Jaya Carpet Python, now she earned her name. Her name was bytch tyts. She struck regardless. you could walk past her set up, she'd strike. glance towards her from the other side of the room, she'd strike. she was a mean girly who is now with a carpet python breeder <3 so i know she's going to be happy and well cared for.
my boas (RTB) are super sweet. Navoo is no longer with me, Esmee strikes when she's hungry and thinks i have food but never intentionally goes after me. Big Mama is a 15 pound, 6 foot adult, and she's just a huge puppy. <33
my kingsnakes when i had them were feisty and would snap and try to eat your hand but they didn't hurt.
The gopher snake i once caught never tried to strike, and i released it a few hours later after the initial catch, in a field away from the house because of the threats the family was throwing at it to kill it.
and the corns ive had the pleasure of owning in the past were sweet as pie baby kins.
But, every species has its exceptions. Some may be known to be docile, some may be known to be hostile, but there will be those cases where one goes against the 'typical' standard for temperament. Thor was a grumpy ball python, and he struck whenever he saw anything come near him. I've met Naga, a super sweet carpet and ive heard nothing but bad on their temperaments. it all depends on the animal itself.

My baby ball is very calm and seems friendly. Can I assume this temperament will continue as the snake grows??
has not attempted to strike at me once and let's me do anything I want in her tank with no fuss.
