Infestation! (Not mites)

Ugh...ever since moving my snakes to their rack system and removing the lids off of the tubs I have been having a huge issue with fruit flies\gnats . Every time I open one of my upper level tubs I get a few that fly out. I am finding these things all over the house now. There is no feces or urates in the tubs 90% of the time but I am still finding them there. Killing these things makes me feel like Hercules vs the Hydra. Every time i kill one another two pop up! They also seem to like getting in your face for no reason! Anyone else dealing with or dealt with this issue? BTW I am using Kraft Paper for substrate.

I have had to deal with fruit flies at a restaurant that i worked at, We had large amount of fruit and sweats that they were attracted to. Have some cups covered with plastic wrap on the top and take a pen to make wholes in the middle, fill the cups with wine, vinegar, or OJ to attract them.


This method is ok at best, it really worked best in conjunction with this citrus goo stuff that we poured down the drains in the entire restaurant for months. Apparently they love to lay their eggs in damp, dark, and humid places like the drains by the dishwasher. Your tubs are probably an ideal spot to lay eggs and they are finding food somewhere else, i would look into the goo stuff i was mentioning but i have a feeling using it on your cages wouldn't be too practical or efficient.

Thanks that must be it...We usually get them in the summer but by this time of year it usually has died down to none. But since i opened up those tubs its been a swarm lol...i can imaging the dampness, heat, and high humidity are ideal for breeding. Now time for solutions. I have tried the cup of wine and saran wrap trap with minimal success in the past but cant hurt to try again...also this goo that you used...does it kill the flies or just collects the eggs?
