I always try to acquire "extras."
I have (that is, had) an extra tank, screen lid, and clips. I have (had) 2 "extra" UTH's.

This. I constantly scour the local reptile forums and CL for used cages (not tanks). Oh, and thermostats. There's no such thing as an extra thermostat, it's usually pressed into service within a month of it being purchased.
