Many people have been sorely disappointed after years of raising their snake when realizing the gender is actually different than what was advertised. Some breeders are much more reputable than others but mistakes happen so gender should always be double checked when receiving a new snake without exception. This prevents any trouble down the road and is included in many breeders' TOS that the gender must be checked within X time or any guarantees are void.
