    Couple Bredli Questions

I got a lovely year-old Bredli girl on Saturday, and have a couple quick questions:

Do Bredli tend to ignore hides? I started her out with three (cool, warm, medium), and she ignores them, and instead curled up in the corner behind one. I replaced that one with some different decor last night to give her a taller thing to hide behind that takes up less floor space.

I like "The Complete Children's Python" and was going to get a copy of "The Complete Carpet Python", and then I noticed that the subtitle says its focused on Spilota. Is it also useful for Bredli?

And here's some pictures of Yingarna from Sunday morning:

    Doing her Chondro impression:

    Doing a tail-stand:

    Just hangin' out:

We took the thermometer she was hanging on down before the Velcro let loose and dumped her, and are getting her a ledge instead.

Hmm...need to update my profile and sig...

If you just picked her up last week, she is not even close to being settled in. The cage looks a little too arboreal from what I can tell. Even though ALL carpets are semi to highly arboreal, you still want something that will accommodate your snake when fully grown. Bredli are one of the larger, heavier bodied species and from what I can see in the pictures your cage is really tight.

The hides probably don't differ in climate a great deal and seem close together. At least in the pictures they do.

By all means buy THE COMPLETE CARPET PYTHON ! It is a fantastic resources and it cover almost ALL species of the morelia family and very in-depth levels.

That is a nice looking snake.

They actually use hides, but to answer your question, they will ignore them too. They are confident snakes and for whatever reason, the carpets will often lay out in the open with no fear. I always like to give the option of a couple of hides. Whether my coastal will bask on top of them or go inside them depends on the phase she is in.

This coastal, female is a 6+ footer and she is in a 4 x 2 x 2 foot cage. She is not using her hides here. She is a little over 2 years old.

Carpet pythons are one of the best display snakes around.

Your cage looks very nice, I'm just concerned its a bit tight.

Enjoy that animal! Its a beauty.

    Couple Bredli Questions

Great looking Carpet you have there!

I agree with Gio, you have good upward mobility for your snake, but no floor room to stretch out.

You may want to think of this enclosure as a temporary one until you can get at least get a 3 foot long one, keeping in mind that you will probably need a four footer within a year or so. Depending upon your situation maybe skip the 3 foot and go straight to 4? I don't know, that's just a decision you will have to make based on your situation money wise, space wise, etc.

I have a 2 yr old male Coastal that is about 6 ft. He has outgrown his 3 foot enclosure. I'm saving up for 4x2x2 now, as well as one for my 2 yr old female which is 5 foot long.

Mack The Knife in quarantine. 2 yrs/6ft

    Etta in quarantine. 2yrs/5ft

As far as the hides, I've only seen these two use them once in the one month that I've owned them.

Now my big Coastal, Lizzy at 7+ ft only used her hide the first week of her new enclosure.

Lizzy taking a break from jail breaking.

    Enjoy your cool snake!

    Re: Couple Bredli Questions

The long-term plan is definitely to get her a 4' wide arboreal cage, probably from
Animal Plastics. We'll be going to the Tinley Park NARBC show, so if sales of leather goods this weekend go really well, a bigger cage could happen sooner.

I knew carpets would hang out in the open more, but my husband's adult corn snake, who is often out of her hides, retreated to the hides for a couple weeks of settling in after initial cage exploration. So I was wondering if not using a hide was an carpet thing or an individual thing.

Thanks for the input on "The Complete Carpet Python". I expect I'll order a copy real soon now.

I keep telling myself to be patient, but letting new snakes settle in is hard on my patience. She bopped my hand when I was swapping out the hide last night, but I didn't feel any teeth and she stayed in her spot, which is encouraging. My juvenile delinquent Honduran milk would have either teleported away, or chewed on me.

    Couple Bredli Questions

I forgot to "Amen" the book, a definite must!

You may already do something similar, but I will mention for the benefit of others.

When I am going in the cage whether for quick pick up of something or even spot cleaning; I always gently stroke the snake on the back portion of the body, away from the head first before "going in".
This way they know it is me and not food or an intruder.

If by chance you have to approach your snake from head on, use a hook or paper towel roll to gently rub them with.

I will also talk gently as well so that they feel my vocal vibrations. This just reinforces that it is "me".

    Re: Couple Bredli Questions

Congratulations on getting a bredli! She is going to out grow her current home quick like and in a hurry. I have a Bredli too. September was a year of having her. Her thread is here: http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=218061
    My new Bredli

She was first housed in a similar enclosure because I thought I had time to build her a custom. Mine was not as tall but was a little bigger I think. Work got in the way of that. She out grew her first home in probably six months. I still have not finished her permanent home yet. So she now has a temp home in a 120gal aquarium.

She uses her hides all the time. She just spend 2 weeks roughly in her hides due to shedding. She does perch on short adjustable curtain rods that I got from Walmart. I have 5 slightly spaced apart that she coils on and looks down in her waiting on food to pass by pose.

To me, mine is still pretty shy. She will go to a hide sometimes due to shyness. A lot of 72 hr shifts have cut into time to work with her.

Your girl is still young so work with her as often as you can and research and plan for a bigger home.

    Re: Couple Bredli Questions

My husband is getting a little Vietnamese Blue Beauty at the Tinley Park show tomorrow, so Yingarna got moved up to a bit bigger cage this week. She's still the first one I plan to get an AP cage for (probably a 4x2x3), but now she's looking less cramped. She's in the one on the right:

    Re: Couple Bredli Questions

That set up looks cool. How is the ledge attached to the glass? She looks like she has plenty of room in that enclosure for some time. That should give you ample time to find her permanent home and set it up however you want. Do you have a temp. /humidity gauge inside the enclosure?

    Re: Couple Bredli Questions

The shelf is a Magnaturals brand, XL size, holds on with 2 magnets (we're assuming rare earth), rated for up to 2 pounds. She definitely likes it.

We've got a thermostat probes for the UTH and heat lamp, but not a dedicated humidity sensor. The VBB's cage has one, so we can move it over to check. We also have an IR thermometer to check temps at various places in cages.

    Re: Couple Bredli Questions

I use this in my 3 enclosures. It is $12 at Walmart. I put the unit itself on the cold side and the probe up under my substrate on the hot side. It does humidity also. I have it set to show both Temps and the humidity.

I made a ledge out of short adjustable curtain rods. I have thought about cutting a board to sit on them so it is a more sold surface for my bredli to sit on and not just 5 bars.
