Ermergerd!
To answer your original question. Yes, there are cheaper alternatives to a herpstat. A hydrofarm thermostat is a pretty reliable and much cheaper option. About $30 on Amazon. They're a good option when you're on a budget, but with five snakes it might be better to go with the herpstat. The herpstat has certain fail safes built in to keep your pets safe and with a collection like that I would recommend it, getting five snakes treated for burns at the vet is a lot more expensive than a herpstat.
You'll have to excuse us if we seem rude, but your current set up is severely risking your snakes health whether you think it is or not. An unregulated heat pad gets WAY hotter than 90 degrees so it sounds like whatever method you are using to read temps is not accurate. With your thermostat I would recommend also getting a temp gun or some digital thermometers with probes (accurite makes a good one) to accurately read your belly heat, ambient temps, and humidity.

i dont really care about "rude", all i'm saying is dont expect to be listened to if you are. you can talk professionally or not. i know heat pads get hotter than 90 degrees. i have a temp gun, i have two hydro-thermometers and an additional regular thermometer on all my tanks. the only thing i didn't have was the herpstat. all i do is come on here and ask for help. the books dont tell me enough and i dont trust the pet store clerks at all. if people want to help i except it, but all the extra stuff, i dont.

Re: Ermergerd!
Regardless of how they say it, the point everyone is trying to get across is that you're roommate does not replace the reliability of a thermostat unless they are going to sit in front of the tanks 24/7 and monitor the temperature. At any time that heat mat could overheat and burn your snake and someone might not catch it in time. A thermostat will turn the heat mat on and off on it's own and keep it at the set temperature. So please, unplug the heat mats for now until you get yourself a thermostat. No one on this forum wants to see your snakes injured and I imagine you don't either.

Your rude is my blunt.

This is less than ten minutes of running.
There is a reason some of us will jump on the ignorance of not running a thermostat on a contact heat source.

A thermostat costs less than a vet bill for a burned snake.

Re: Ermergerd!
Not to sound rude myself but I think people are being, "rude" because the system you're trying to use will not work. You can't regulate how much heat they are putting out without a thermostat and unplugging it won't stop it from malfunctioning and burning or cooking your snake with the possibility of not only injury but death of the animal. Those heaters heat up FAST and you more then likely won't catch it in time before the damage is done. People are trying to give you advice and you for some reason are still set on the idea that your system actually works. If that is your mindset then why ask for advice?
I think it's safe to say everyone here loves these animals and no one likes the idea of one suffering or dying from a incident that could easily be prevented. So some of us get a little passionate and come off as rude to see the issue corrected for the animals sake.
I know it seems expensive but it's in the best interest for your animals and as the rule with any pet ownership, if you cant afford the necessities then you can't afford the pet.
I hope you can get your hands on a thermostat you can afford. Good luck!

Re: Ermergerd!
And to answer your original question, break down and get the herpstat, I think they are totally worth the cost as far as any thermostats go.
