    A rude a awakening

The craziest, funniest , nastiest thing just happened and I had to share it. I have bad allergies so I took some Benadryl and about and hour or so a go I tired so I got into bed. My dog was sleeping on my floor and all my snakes were out. My youngest ball python just she's this morning so I was expecting him to poop soon. I feel asleep and I was awakened to what I though was my dog starting to puke on my floor but I happened to glance over at my ball python Reggie taking a dump. This snake let out this massive fart that I thought was my dog puking.

Free-range ball pythons? Interesting, but just asking for trouble...

? Just wondering, are dogs usually safe to have around snakes? I'd never heard of snakes being out of their tanks free with a dog before. I am new to reptiles but I know dogs and all the ones I've been around like to figure things out with their mouths

My cats ok with my larger 2000 plus gram ball pythons but I started by always handling my cat before the snakes so they get to know that scent but I keep my new kitten clear of them because yea too small

Wait... So, if I'm reading this correctly your snakes roam free... With a dog on the loose as well? I cannot articulate how bad of an idea that is. Not only does that put your snakes in danger of being harmed by the dog, but there is no way they have the appropriate temp and humidity free-ranging like that, and you run the very high risk of them getting somewhere you can't find them or getting into something harmful.
I sincerely hope everyone is just misreading what you wrote.

No, your gut feeling is right, it's not safe. It's really not safe to have your snake around any other animal unless you are directly supervising the ENTIRE time. But unless you're breeding or feeding live, having your snake around another animal only benefits YOU and does nothing for the snake, so IMO shouldn't be done to begin with.

Are you sure the OP doesn't mean the snakes were out of their hides exploring their tanks?

I think your real rude awakening, according to the forum posters and myself, is that it's irresponsible to let your snakes roam free. Especially around other animals/pets.

I've heard a lot of crazy stuff from other snake keepers. like:

    1) Taking their snake in the car with them for a ride
    2) Keeping their snake out of it's enclosure for hours at a time
    3) Taking their snake out in public
    4) Letting their snake roam around the house freely with other pets around

All those things are terrible ideas.

People need to remember, snakes aren't dogs, they don't benefit from an excess of social activity. They have no need or want to be anywhere but their safe little enclosure. Doing any of the things I listed is not helpful to your snake at all, it's actually quite selfish of you to do those things since it is purely for your own enjoyment. Holding your snakes from time to time is generally accepted as completely fine for the snake. Just keep it's cage outings to around 15 minutes or so, of course this advice hinges on your want to be a good, responsible keeper, and able to put your snakes health and well being before yourself.

Yeah, you had a lot of us concerned there! I was picturing snakes everywhere, on the carpet and climbing up furniture and all kinds of nonsense. I'm glad it was just a communication issue!
