    A lot of screws are made of fairly soft metal.

    I sometimes cut the ends off screws that are too long and use them that way. If I have to take off half an inch, or so, I'll use bolt cutters, but for just the tip, maybe try some flush cut pliers, and a file. I consider that good enough for rabbits and chickens, but for a snake, I'd probably add a dab of silicone caulk, or some E6000 glue (what I happen to have around here), just to be absolutely sure the cut end isn't sharp.
