What would you hold back?
Okay, so the pairing was a clown to a spider (not het clown). I got 7 good eggs due august 8th. What would you be looking for to hold back from this clutch and why? I'm trying to understand the whole "hold back" thing better. Thanks!

Re: What would you hold back?
I would hold back a male spider and 2 female normals. You then breed the male to both females and increase your chances for spider clowns.
For my spider albino to pied pairing, I also got 7 eggs. I kept 1.1 normal and a 0.1 spider.
In your case, you'd keep a male spider to get more spider clowns, whereas I kept a female spider, as I'm not interested in a spider pied, though I would keep an albino spider pied.
My ultimate goal is an Albino Clown Pied.

I see your reasoning...but wouldn't I want a female spider to breed to my male clown?

Without seeing the clutch.
I would hold back all females.
They take longer to grow out but you already have the male clown.

That is that pairing but do you have any other animals with the clown genes (females, older ones) either hets or visuals?
If you do than hold back a male Spider Het Clown this will cut back down on time.
If you don't than hold back as many Spider Het Clowns you can hold back and sell the het clowns.

I'm going to be making the same exact pairing this fall and plan to hold back all of the female spider het clowns and sell everything else.
My reasoning is that hopefully I will also produce a male pastel clown from my clown to my pastel het clown female. When the male pastel clown and female spider hets are up to size I can then try for bumblebee clowns. Of course that's all assuming everything goes exactly as planned

My male breeder clown is the only clown I have, but I have a pastel het clown female around 800g

In that case I would hold back a Spider Het Clown Male, by the time she is ready so will he. This will allow you to shoot for Bumblebee Clown in no time. Even in that case holding back 1 or 2 females Spider Het Clown can't hurt if you have the room, you never have enough female Hets.
If you don't want to keep a male you can hold back some female Spider Het Clowns instead and pair the Clown to your Pastel Het Clown and hold a male later own from that clutch (if there is a male) it's the longer route but with better odds but if you don't produce male Pastel Clown it will be an even longer route.
