You can soak them in a diluted bleach water mix for several hours then scrub with a green scrub pad. Then you can air dry or bake dry @ low heat for several hours.

Yeah I am thinking that might be best and easier/faster to clean. I really don't like using bleach around my animals. It also gives me a wicked headache.

You can boil them in a big pot. Spray with chlorhexadine, let soak, and dry. And then boil again. Or just replace with plastic stuff.

You can get spares and run the dirty stuff through the dishwasher.

Hot water and a stiff bristle brush. Bake for an hour at 200° if you want to sanitize, but I only do this with items coming from a show or store. I get most of my branches outside.

Would it be smart or bad to finish it with polyurethane after sanitizing?

Polyurethane can take weeks to fully cure out to where there is no smell, so I would recommend polycrylic instead if your going to do it. Can't see it being a problem, but I've never found a reason to want to.
