It's perfectly fine to tape the probe directly to the heat tape. I don't know who told you this nonsense that it's a bad thing.

As for the RHP. My thermostat probe is placed about an inch below the RHP and secured so that the Snake cannot move it. It's a little more tricky than a uth but once you get it dialed in you generally don't need to touch it.
