I think a more important question is "how much experience does the veterinarian have working with _____ ?" I understand cost is a realistic factor when it comes to veterinary care, but finding an experienced practitioner should be the ultimate goal. I would recommend calling various clinics, looking at online reviews/forums, asking other hobbyists/local herp society in order to find an experienced vet who is knowledgeable working with the particular species you have.
