I give my males at least three days off, after a lock. Also you only need to breed a female once a month to get a fertile clutch.

I give mine a day unless they are scheduled to eat or going into shed.

A male does not need to get around each females much once a month with each females is more than enough.
So if you have 3 females you can do 2 days with each females and give him the rest of the month off, if you ave more just make sure to give him time of each week (2 days) during which it will rest and feed.

If you have only two females for your male then yeah you can give him a lot of time off.

As few as one. It happens. Not infrequently.
I shoot for 4-ish locks (that I see) as insurance, in case it wasn't an actual lock, the male was having an 'off' day in the swimmer production department, whatever. Or about one a month while pairing.
