What kind of hide is it, and where is it located in the enclosure? Is it warmer or cooler inside?

He may simply want to rest in a different temperature zone than what the hide provides. Or it may not feel particularly "hidden" if it's one of those half-logs or something else that is big and airy (relatively speaking). They really like something snug fitting, that hugs them on all sides and blocks out the light. And if they have two or more of those available in different temperature zones in their enclosure, they're far more likely to stay in the hides.

Or, he could just be living up to the ball python motto of keeping keepers confused and off balanced.
