Use betadine. Topical anesthetic. It won't give you the possible issues of using neosporin. Dont ever use that stuff on snakes unless if possible. Don't want to use petroleum-based products as it can damage the scales after awhile.

Good point!

I only use it short term. 2-3, 4 days max till a natural barrier is formed, even though minimal.

If you keep it clean and treat as suggested and watch for any issues yes he should be fine. Betadine is what I use. I haven't ran into the neosporin scale issue but that's just me.

I mean I could see it posing a problem if you greased the snake head to butt in it but like I said, put a little on a Q-Tip and just dab the spot to kill any possible germs. Once or twice will be all you really need.

I'm personally super careful when using any human products on or near my snake. I have never had to use neosporin on her before, and I'm personally allergic, so I don't even have it in my home. Bedadine is good, my mom owned a ranch, she said if you use bedadine, water it down so it looks like super weak tea. That stuff is very strong. We used it on horses, and it was sometimes too strong for them.

Yeah you definitely need to water down the Betadine. And your mom is right, you want the color of a weak tea. I used Neosporin on Harley when she somehow pulled out one of her toenails and it worked fine. I just dabbed her toe like 3 days and she was fine. I mean I'm sure if you used it for 6 months straight, then the petroleum might not be good but all you are trying to do is kill any germs for a day or 2 or 3. The animals immune system will take care of the rest assuming you are keeping it fairly clean and not having the animal sit in a septic tank of a cage. Now for something bigger than a nick or scratch, I would say yeah go for Betadine but for a scratch or nick, a dab of Neo for a couple days will be fine and it is easier to apply than mixing up Betadine and doing the whole soak thing and stuff.

And right after the giant arguement we had about feeding live. The other users had it spot on. Luckily it's in a spot that isn't going to constantly rub on stuff.

That sucks. I'm so glad I am down to one snake in a 20 snake collection eating live.

Make sure to keep it clean and I would take the diluted betadine suggestion.

I've personally seen some OLDER live eaters of many different species that look like Space Marines, battle scarred, missing an eye, dead/blind eyes, multiple healed scars, etc. Some snakes never get a mark, it's up to fate, I guess

A friend that I play cards with on the weekend just took his snake to the vet two weeks ago. The mouse got the snake under and over the top most eye scale and removed some of the "meat" good vet though should be able to save the eye. Be careful.
