For me it is more about how the snake reacts/feels than the snake to tub ratio. I have some animals that absolutely will not eat if they don't have a hide, even if they are in a secure space. I also have others that don't care how much space they have, and they feed like no tomorrow! I notice my more shy feeders seem to prefer/need a hide while in a rack.
This, I have a 2500 gram normal male in a 41-qt tub that stuffs himself under his hide and won't eat without one. The male just above him in the rack is only 1000 grams, doesn't have a hide, and if he's not eating it's because he's focused on the girls.
