Supplies?
Hello Everyone!
I was wondering what things/supplies that I would need to purchase to have a happy 90 gram baby pied male.
Yours,
Jacob

Re: Supplies?
That's a really vague question. You mean terrarium wise or what?

If you're doing a glass tank:
Tank with locking top
Under tank heater (UTH)
Thermostat to regulate UTH, this is probably the most important thing you need on your list!!!! DO NOT SKIP
If your room temps are not in the 80's then you will likely need a basking lamp and bulb to bring the temps up and create a basking spot.
Substrate such as aspen bedding or cypress mulch will help with getting humidity right (eventually).
2 hides (not the half round logs either) one for the hot side and one for the warm side. I use the black plastic ones from Reptile Basics (you can order almost all of the stuff listed here from them)
Infra Red temperature gun for reading surface temps (Do not buy the cheap dial kind thermometer or hygrometer, they're junk).
water dish
feeding tongs 12" or longer
feeder mice or frozen mice/rats
cleaning supplies
digital hygrometer
If you're doing a tub set up then the big difference tends to be the heat lamp as most don't use them. It can be done but I don't know the current opinion on their usage, I'm thinking it's not suggested as it's a bit of a safety hazard.

Nothing bigger than a 6 quarts or 15 quarts tub.
Aspen Bedding
Plastic Flower Pot Saucers (6 inches in diameter) 1 or 2 depending on the tub size.
UTH
Thermostat
Water Dish
Thermomether / Hygrometer
Once the animal is bigger and eating for you, you can consider a larger enclosure (plastic, glass or cage)
Do not buy food in advance, ask the breeder what the animal is currently feeding (likely live) and feed the same prey items that were offered before, once the animal eats for you (which is the hardest part for new owners) you can consider switching prey type.

Re: Supplies?
Yes. A glass tank with what sort of supplies in and out of the tank.

This should cover all the inside of the glass tank:

I'd also get feeding tongs. For cleaning I use Natural Chemistry Healthy Habitat.

Re: Supplies?
My pytHon loves his hiding spots and the key is to have it smaller than what you think because they would like to have all their sides touch the sides of the hiding area. So what he loves best is the box that came from the lamp. It is a square box with a circular hole on the top and bottom. It's so cute when he pokes his face out the top of the whole! :-) check out craigslist, offer up, and any site that has classified sales to find the set up at a cheaper price. Also, I had cedar shavings out some type of shavings but when he ate he always got a piece in his mouth. He would not swallow it but it was still annoying for him to have to spit it out so I now use a mat that restaurants use for the floor behind the bar area and in the kitchen area, the one that's black with holes in it. It also helps them with shedding! :-)

Re: Supplies?
Make sure you have
- a water dish big enough for him to lay in if he needs it, and I would even go bigger because he's still small. He will grow out of it.
- a digital thermometer and hydrometer (I got a combo one at petco for $30)
- a no contact thermometer, for surface temperatures.
- Two hides, just large enough for him to fit in, if you get bigger hides, you can rig them to grow with him. Make sure than the tank lid fits securely.
- A pair of feeding tongs,
- a kitchen scale
- a basking or heat lamp. I prefer ceramic as they don't give off light, only heat.
-an under tank heater AND a thermostat. I personally don't have a uth, but I should. If you get a uth you MUST HAVE a thermostat. No exceptions.
- I use coconut substrate. It holds humidity well, and is easy to clean.
- sphagnum Moss, for shedding time.
- cleaner that is safe for your snake, look around.
- a separate small tub to put your snake in while cleaning their tank. If you want to feed outside of the tank, this can double as a feeding box.
All of these things listed are for a GLASS TANK ENCLOSURE. I don't use the tub/rack system because it just doesn't make much sense to me as I only have one snake.
Most importantly make sure you have a reptile vet near by. I have an emergency fund for Monty set aside for vet visits, or food, or if her heat lamp burns out, etc. I also keep reptile grade warmers on hand, If the power goes out these are a good thing to have on hand. They were the only thing I had to order online.
