Caramel Pied Project

Hi everyone.

I have a big gravid Caramel who was bred to a Pastel Pied this season. I am expecting a few dbl het caramel pieds and will not be holding back all of them. I have been looking around online and at other sites trying to find anyone else selling/breeding anything for the caramel pied project to get an idea of what the level of interest out there is and what people are paying for visuals and dbl hets.

I did find someone selling a visual for $15k, but the site may have been a few years old, so the price may have dropped (likely dropped).

does anyone have any insight into this project and what people are putting those dbl hets out for? Any information will be greatly appreciated as well.

Well it depends on a few things.

Supply and demand is a key factor and in the case of caramel projects this is where it becomes tricky. Supply is low be demand is even lower.
I do not know if you have paid attention to the market in general or the caramel market in particular but over the past several years most breeders have deserted caramels and their combos and the few being sold are basically pet projects.

I personally would not work with caramels or their combos even if I was given some for free and I have a feeling I am not the only one. (ultramels now it would be different)

The second issue when selling not just het but any animal is reputation, if you pop out of nowhere and have no reputation it will me more difficult for you to move hets or double hets, reputation does not always mean that you have 100 of feedbacks and 1000 of sales, it sometimes just mean to have a presence online and be an asset to the community.

I'm guessing it's something like the spider wobble or the super black pastel/ super cinnamon issues.

They are prone to kinking sure some are not but it's been in the minority which is why people have abandoned them and turned to Ultramels which look better IMO and are not prone to kinking.

I think the caramel gene is pretty. Do you guys feel that the gene isn't being worked because of the kinks or that there are "nicer" colors to work with?

People have gave up on them because of the kinking issue that is prevalent with this mutation and as mentioned they have found an alternative that is very similar http://www.worldofballpythons.com/mo...tramelanistic/ (better looking IMO)

It's heartbreaking enough when you have deformities when breeding but why persist when it is common knowledge that a mutation as issue as serious as this one?

This is a kink in my old caramel female, she was just a pet.

Also, there have been reports of many caramel females slugging out. Hopefully you don't have that problem.

I'm having trouble giving up on my caramel project (started with a 66% chance het male wayyy back in the day).

Deborah, thanks for answering my question. Still new to these particular animals. It's nice to learn so much about them. I very much agree with not breeding if health affecting deformities are known. It's why I will never purchase anything with spider in it. I'm sad that caramel is affected with kinks, but it's wonderful that there's a similar morph.
