Most rat snakes are semi-arboreal. In fact when we think about the potential elevation changes even within a small stretch of forest giving our pets something to climb on is probably a good idea.
Take a fallen oak tree for example. The roots usually come up with it and that usually is 3-4 feet high by itself. That can create all sorts of hides for snakes and their prey. In the Planet Earth series it shows a gopher snake (considered terrestrial) scaling a 100-200 foot cliff to get to some baby birds.
