Thumbs up Re: What to use to treat an stubborn RI?

Try to get a sputum and or sniffle sample on a q tip and zip lock it for the vet to culture. The reptiles I know usually respond to Baytril in uncomplicated ri. The dose is 5- 10mg/kg depending on the route of administration for 7 to 10 days every 24 hrs. The real issue is to identify the type of bacteria so the appropriate antibiotic can target the infection. Since most reptiles are infected with gram negative bacteria they get treated symptomatically. Amoxicillin is 22mg/kg for reptiles and I am not sure about the proper doses for rats or birds in either of these two medications. Fortaz is a newer medication that is classified as a cephalosporin but I am not familiar with the dosages. You can google Melissa Kaplan for her medication chart and dosages but I think it's just for reptiles and chelonians. Hope this helped! Stay in peace and not pieces. Sorry for the loss of your bp.
