    Re: BHP's Black Head Pythons

    Hi Shawn,

I breed pretty much exclusively BHPs. Hit me up with any questions you might have.

Couple things, have you purchased BHPs yet?

This is the most important part of owning BHPs is buying them from a source that has animals you can be successful with.
Buying BHPs from pet stores, breeders who just have a pair and hasn't worked with them to learn their habits, etc....... is almost assuring you that you won't be successful with the species.
They have a few quirks that can be simply managed if you know what you're looking for and how to raise them.

Breeding is fairly easy but, hatching eggs is very difficult (again....goes back to the small quirks of the adults)

    Hey Derek,

I'm picking up a 2014 female this weekend that I currently have on hold. Besides her looks what really drew me to her was that she took to feeding straight out of the egg without any assists required. I'd love to learn more about their quirks as I'll be looking for a male soon and want to give a shot at breeding in 3-4 years. I've been reading up a good deal but don't want to dampen my chances because I missed something vital.

From my research failure to create thriving, producing adults always seems to stem from obesity. They feed almost exclusively on reptiles in the wild so to match the low fat intake I plan on feeding smaller, leaner rodents as well as appropriately sized chicks and quail. I'll be working through trial and error to come up with my ratio of rodent:fowl and would appreciate your input.

I'm also interested in the heritability of pattern and color. I know they go through a color change and my girl has a fair chance at ending up the same shade of black and white as her folks but how heritable is pattern? She looks identical to her parents in that regard but when I look at a clutch shot there's a good bit of variety in there pattern-wise.

    Thanks,
    John

John, hit me up with an email and I'll point ya in the right direction. It's easier to get on the phone than to type an essay. haha.
