There will be variables in figuring this out. You may get better results with a radiant heat panel but the cage material, room temp, and desired temps are going to come into play with whatever you get.

I don't see you heating a cage that large with just one che. Your best option would be to have a hotspot created by a uth, che, rhp, etc and then keep the ambient temps good by heating the room with a heater. I use a oil heater in my snake room and then have a hotspot in each cage. It works great and requires less equipment than heating each cage with their own devices.

It's a wooden VivExotic viv but its currently heated with two identical 18" x12" heat mats running on one stat . Currently set at 90F but I've read many times that they aren't suitable for a 7' adult Boa so I'm considering going the ceramic route for the warm end 90F and maybe setting the heat mats down to 80F for the cooler end .

All my cages have a UTH for the hotspot. The rest of the cage stays in the range of 77-81 throughout the day by way of the oil heater.

I like to offer a hotspot and a cool end but many here only warm the air in the room and do not bother with a hotspot. A gradient while good is not absolutely necessary in every situation. As long as I have a good hotspot and the ambient temps are within range Im happy and so is my collection.

UTH is presumably under tank heater / heat mat ??
I've got two of those already ( on a stat ) but I keep reading that they're no use for heavy bodied snakes so that's why I'm looking at going down this ceramic route .

Yes, under tank heater. Yours being wood only a few kinds of uth can/should be used.

I have PVC cages that house my 30lb 5.5ft Blood and my 6ft BRB. Both have a uth mounted to the outside bottom of their cage and they work fine. Bloods are extremely heavy bodied and mine has no issues with a uth.

Just thinking ....If I'm replacing two 21W heat mats with a new 250W ceramic on a pulse thermostat am I going to see a massive increase in our electric bills ?

I doubt massive increases but maybe alittle. It will really depends on how hard and long the rhp has to work to keep your temps and therefore burn electricity. Being you have wood cages that are probably pretty insulated I doubt they will be pumping that much heat.

That of course is just a guess.
