Breeding weight

I have had this girl for a few months now, and I'm planning on breeding her with an OD in the future. I wanted to know what weight is it safe for her to breed. I have head several different numbers, so I figured I post and see what you guys think.

It's a combination of age and weight.

For example I would breed a 1500 grams female that is 18 months old however I would not breed a 12 months old that is 1200 grams even though I would breed a 1100 female that is 3 or 4 years old.

I should also had that I pay close attention to the overall look of the animal, I have females that are the right age, fit my weight criteria as a minimum but do not look right to me and are not being bred.

1500 grams is the (mostly) agreed upon minimum. There's a lot of debate about breeding any smaller and the effects of it, but the smallest weight I've heard of in that debate is still around 1200g, so this girl has got some growing to do either way.

*Edit; I stand corrected on the smallest weight included in the debate. Deborah probably knows more about it than I do.

Thanks for the information. What about males? I know it's less but how much? And also right now I'm feed her 2 mice every five days. Is that good?

Males can breed soon as they produce sperm plugs, now it does not mean they will.

Smaller males in the 400 grams range can be bred however it requires close monitoring as breeding can take it's toll on.

I am mainly successful with males 600 grams and up, never had any luck with smaller males.

I would bump her up to small rats if you can. They will be a better food item than mice at her weight. If small rats are still to big try rat pups, as far as weights go I've always heard 1500 grams as the minimum for females and between 400 and 500 grams for males. My boys are both at least 500 grams and my girls are about the 1500 mark, my pastel being much bigger and my normal being I think 1550 last time I checked. But anyway, check out snakbytestv on YouTube Brian did a great video on this recently. And of course everyone here will have more info.
