Switching from glass tank to tub, need advice.
You guys were completely right about a glass tank being hard to keep up. After having Oliver for a few months, I decided to make the switch. The ease of care sounds soooo much better than what I am doing now. Anyways, I was wondering what size tub should I use for him. He is 23 inches long and 363 grams. What would you recommend? I was also wondering, how does the cold part of the tub stay warm if there is only the uth ( run on a therm, of course. ) I keep my house at 72 degrees. Would this affect the heat in the tub? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I feel ya,this is where I'm at
I'm finding it is hard to regulate tubs temps without a rack. my thermo has an alarm for too hot too cold so for now I found myself using an empty bin as insulator from floor tempature. a heating pad for people under that to give a general warmth and the the under tank heat I put on the sides to get a warm side. When you get a tote or tub I didn't like my first choice at only $5 hefty brand was on a good sale but the floor had a bump around it that collected the waste and defeated the ease of cleaning. So smooth bottoms would be a good idea. The good thing about tubs is they are pretty cheap and can grow with your snake I've seen sweater box size for hatchlings. I think it would be hard to get heat differences and cramped after you get hides water ect in there.
Hope this helps let me know if you find any tips also

Whether or not a tub is in a rack is irrelevant. I'm sure there are alternatives but the number one way to set up a tub or rack system properly with only belly heat, is to heat the room. My room is kept around 82 degrees so all I need to do is regulate the hot spot.
I think you could also have two uths. Each covering half of the tub. And run those to two separate thermostats.
One uth on the warm end in a cool room will not warm up the cool end enough.

Ah
agreed just keeping the whole room warm just supplying a warm spot would be my first option also and is kinda how I have it but if the orignal poster is only going to have one tub on the floor not a rack from my personal experience of this exact scenario is a pain it the butt. If it is directly on carpet no under tank heater is it is hard wood it gets darn cold and drafty. Then a temp difference on anything smaller than the 34qt is almost unnoticeable. If you heat the side of a 18 inch Tupperware it gets the whole thing warm.

Racks are also very relevant if you use one take a tub out of your rack and put a lid on it on the floor and there's a big difference. Ambient heat heat retention air circulation evaporation almost everything is differant from a tub by itself then in a rack

What I meant by that is that even if you have your tubs in a rack system, uth on one end still won't heat the whole thing.

I haven't had any issues with my glass tank as far as humidity and temps go. But my weekly cleaning takes about an hour to an hour and a half. The bulk of the time comes from boiling and squeezing the water out of the substrate.
I never bothered with trying to figure the tub system out of fear of the light or UTH melting it.

It's a shame though as you can't observe them anywhere near as well in a rub.

They do make completly clear 34qt and41qt tubs they are polycarbonate hard plastic like the drawers in your fridge and can be got at rest supply's stores or online but they are around 40-50 dollar each. There is a company that makes racks using them and they are so much nicer looking then the hazy clear white we all use.

That why I ened up using paper towels for substrate, cleaning ease I can clean and disinfect a tub throw it around to dry it in like 5 mins paper towels are great bedding cleaning supply and if you have any hatchlings to tube is their fav hide ever. There is also a paper roll product ment just for lining tubs and its avlibile in bulk
the heat on the plastic is why I'm using side heat, for now I have already seen warping when I put the Uth on the lid of they empty tub below. It maybe the hefty brand being made cheaper that others I don't know but the belly heat is a concern for me too. Your not supposed to reuse or heat up bottled water cause it releases something out of the plastic so I imagine a Uth does the same to a plastic tub
