What paint or wood sealer is safe?

I just bought a decorative box as a neat different hide for my ball python. I got it home and cut a hole in the side as an entrance but I'm now concerned that the wood (seems like particle board) and the paint is my safe for the snake. The inside paint kinda rubbed off on me. I can't return it so....

I think the best bet is to sand all the paint off but I'm worried about the wood too. Is there a safe spray paint I can cover the inside in? Even better would be some sorry of sealer, polyurethane type thing? Waterproof even? Clear coat of plastic spray?

I'd really appreciate some suggestions thanks everyone!

Hmmm. You could put in a little bit of work and coat it with 100% silicon(no mold resistants etc.) and it would last a looong time. It may take a few tubes and you would need a calking gun.

Could I coat the flat surfaces with that like paint? I'm thinking maybe there is a spray paint like silicon substance out there, if silicon is safe for them.

I would use polyurethane, several coats, then let it air out for a couple weeks. I seal all my wooden racks this way.

Any type of polyurethane in particular? Sucks that I would have to wait a few weeks though. Snake is missing his cool side hide.

I use an enamel weather proof door paint from Home Depot. It seals the wood up nice.

Would mineral oil be ok? Rub some into the wood. Obviously no where near as effective as the other stuff but I just don't want to risk using all those sprays
