Re: Finding male for female, what weights/ages?

Many people agree the minimum weight to start breeding a female is about 1500 grams but that has a few variables attached to it. That is presuming the female is at least 18 to 24 months old minimum and hasn't been overfed. Some people have bred females that were smaller, but often that is when a female is a problem eater and/or not growing as quickly as most. So if you have a 4 or 5 year old female and she is still only 1200 to 1300 grams, some people will go ahead and pair her since she is sexually mature, and sometimes running their first clutch through them may jump start their eating and they will get up to an average size.

As far as when to get your male, you could wait until your female is about 800 to 1000 grams before you get a male hatchling and by the time the female is ready, the male will likely be close enough. Males can be bred at about 7 months old and as small as 400 grams but most people will try to make sure they are nearer a 1000 so that if they go off feed due to breeding, they don't loose to much weight and start to spiral downward. If you see a male that is perfect for your plans and is so nice you just can't live without, then don't wait and pick him up. He'll still be ready whenever the female is.
