Is there a reason you are feeding him outside of his enclosure? If reason is anything to do with cage aggression or food association, that is a myth

but if you still choose to, for just feeding I never really saw a reason to put anything down for a feeding tank, just clean it when they are done.

and YES thaw the hopper out, do not feed them frozen food.
