    Re: Possible het pied?

corey has just given the solution. if you want to be sure you have a het (pied, or otherwise) if one parent is visual, the clutch must be hets. He hasn't got to worry about markers. All his clutch as visual. all his non visuals are hets. That is the way to do it really.

While it is true that having these belly markings or not is not 100% proof (either need to see a visual offspring, or one parent was a visual to be 100%), if I was going to gamble on a possible, I'd pick up one with the markers.

here is one of my 100% het pieds (dad was pied)

It doesn't have the markers but that doesn't mean it's not het you'll have to prove it out to know. If you really want to prove it out best way would to breed it to a visual pied breeding to another het could take awhile to prove. Good luck! I'm hoping for 2 clutches of pieds and albino pieds next year.

The so called het pied markers are not 100% reliable. I hatched out 5 het pieds from a visual pied to het pairings. Of those 5 guaranteed het pied babies, only 2 carried the "markers" the other three did not.

If you are determined to try and prove it as a het, the best way to do it is to breed it to a visual pied. However, since the prices of pieds have come down so low in the last couple of years, if you really want to get in to breeding pieds, I'd go through the extra effort to buy a 100% het pied for breeding. If that is, you can't afford a visual.

Thanks for all the feedback folks. I totally understand proving it out is the only way to know.

Can someone describe for me in words what "the marker" looks like? I've read several threads and looked at pics, but only seen 1 description in words of what it is.

What I can discern is: Strips of mostly unbroken black bordering a clean white belly.

Based on that I can see that the first pic I posted, which I thought might display the marker, actually has some black strips but they are not really at the outside of the belly but on the belly itself. Nor are they as long and unbroken as others.

You don't need words to describe the markers. A picture is worth 1000 words. Mostly solid, unbroken rail road tracks down the sides and a predominanatly clean belly. Your snake has nothing resembling any Pied markers like these.

I have a pic or two of them as well.

The first is a het female, she has pretty good markers, what breeder's call "train tracks".

The second is a het boy, he only has one little "train track" but it's there.
