Thermostats and heat pads

So, if the heat pads always get too hot, why do companies continue to allow them to get that way?

Some reptiles can withstand the heat. Pythons, no. Plus, they are out to make more money. Of course ZooMed wants you to buy their thermostat for $XX extra. Having a built in thermostat would raise the cost of the product beyond the means of what most people would spend.

They're meant to work for multiple animals. BP's need them at a lower temp than some desert-type lizards.

Hi,

It depends on the make sometimes. Some do get considerably hotter than others.

And the manufacturers get away with it mainly because of all the different temps the different species of reptiles in the hobby require. They are, after all, selling the same product to people who keep cornsnakes, bearded dragons, crested geckos and ball pythons. There is no way a single product can be right for heating all those species. Unless you put it on either a rheostat or a thermostat.

If a single product could do everything correctly then you could equally ask why equipment makes also sell thermostats.

Hmmm... Okay. I was wondering because my heat pad is gradually getting hotter. I put many layers of paper towel in for now, but I might pick up the zoomed rheostat tomorrow.

Not a good idea to put a lot of paper towels on it, that can also make it overheat, and possibly catch on fire..just get a rheostat, thermostat, or something. If you have a rheostat then also get an infared heat gun so you can spot check the hot spot and adjust it accordingly

Yes i am picking up rheostat tomorrow. What do you suggest instead of paper towel? I don't want aspen, because I heard of a snake that went blind because aspen got in his eye...

Paper towel is fine to use ........ you just don't want to try and control your temp by layering more paper towels on .
Get the bare glass of the tank bottom to the proper temp, and then just put one layer of paper towel down.
