I've heard that snakes are not capable of showing emotion, but they can make decisions. For example I heard about this guy who wanted to test that theory, so he took the snake close to the ground and it started to climb away. Then, when he lifted his hand, the snake would tighten its grip so it wouldn't fall. They do seem to enjoy "cuddling" not out of affection, but because humans are warm and cozy.
