    "Starts exploring till you stop" - honestly it sounds like he's trying to move away from you touching him, not exploring. Most snakes don't like to be petted, and will avoid being touched directly, at least until they're used to you much more. The fact that he stops "exploring" when you stop touching him is pretty telling. My snake will move away from me when I pet him too. He likes to climb me when I'm sitting stationary, but the moment I start handling him too much he's out.
