    For you, securing the probe to the under side of the heat mat will likely be best. In this case, having a good thermometer (temp gun highly recommended) will be critical. You'll be getting slightly different temperature readings on the bottom side of the heat mat, but this can easily be accounted for if you know what temperatures are the result of this placement inside your tank.

    Edit: Obviously KMG is much less wordy than I am, and thus a couple minutes faster tonight. Ha-rumph...
