Dead crows or parts are legal to keep, just not to buy or sell - they have to be gifted, like with waterfowl. There are states where you can get permits to hunt them.
I'm sorry for mucking up the thread, it's just with this hobby you have to be very careful of what you keep.

Re: Animals in Jars
It's a crow! I actually found it as roadkill and brought it home with me. I checked my local laws, and crows actually have a hunting season in VA. Because I found it in hunting season, I was allowed to keep it (or so said the game warden I called). But it is true that most wild bird species are illegal to possess, even just feathers. I haven't made any new specimens lately due to lack of freezer space, but now that I have a chest freezer I'll likely start up again. I'll post some pictures when I'm not on mobile.

Reminds me of my high school biology teacher's storage room. He had every sort of everything in little jars back there, and any time the anatomy students were dissecting cats and would find kittens, the whole litter would go in a jar. Kind of made for a neat, slightly creepy development progression. He also had lots of snakes and lizards, various rodents and other small mammals, insects and arachnids in smaller jars, and a few cleaned skulls and other bones that weren't in jars but still hung around. Creeped me out, but still kind of cool

Stuff like that fox is pretty creepy looking.
But I am considering doing something like this with reptiles and inverts (which I find less creepy for some reason) eventually, provided they died within reason. To make it look extra-scientific, I'd put labels on them such as the species or even what organ it is, and put them in some fancy jars.

My biology teacher was the same way, I remember he got really excited one time when a student brought in a 2 faced 7 legged lamb that had been born on their farm, he couldn't wait to get that thing pickled.
