I am looking to subscribe to a magazine that will keep me up to date on what is going on in the herp world as a whole - I've been researching for a while but it seems the only ones I can come up with any decent information on are:
Vivarium - this one seems to be VERY popular and informational
Reptiles Magazine - This one has mixed reviews... some say it's not very good for experienced people.
that's really the only two ones I could find I read something about Reptile and herpetology or something but I'm really not sure.. what publication is most likely to keep me on updated? What magazines do the pros read?

Re: Hungry Ball Pythons don't play !!
I get Reptiles Mag! I like it. It does not always have an article on anything I keep, in fact, rarely have I seen anything on the critters I keep..but I do learn some new interesting things, and I do love reading it for the informational value. If you are looking for thorough info on animals in its articles, dont, cause they dont go deeply into subjects. All in all, I like it just for the reading. Then again, I LOVE to read.

Reptiles Magazine has had some really good issues and some really crummy ones too. I'm not real fond of this month's (I always read it when I'm at work) but they usually have nice pictures and a ton of ads and stuff that are fun to look at. Reptiles USA is an anual magazine that tends to have some good articles, too.

Before the Internet, Reptiles magazine was the only way I could find breeders and dealers. I remember looking through all the ads and calling all the 1-800 numbers to be sent catalogues, LOL. I think Big Apple, Bob Clark, and LLL were some of the ones I was sent.
These days, I personally don't really feel a need for a magazine, seeing as how you can more or less find everything you need on the web. Care sheets are easy enough to find, and forums like this one are a great place to hear about firsthand experiences. I'm glad that some of the more experienced herpers are willing to share their knowledge with the rest of us, while the less experienced herpers help to reinforce and retain the knowledge we already possess.
With that said, it is nice to read something tangible that you can carry all over the place (especially on the can!!! ;P) . Also, with the web, you're mostly only going to find what you're looking for. Magazines are great for introducing you to species you've never heard about (I first discovered Green Tree Pythons in Reptiles Magazine). I already have too many herps I want right now though so I don't have that need.
~40 Ball Pythons (mostly Freeway/Asphalt, Bongo, GHI, and Leopard combos)
3.8.3 Green Tree Pythons (mostly TM/TW blueline, a few Highland/Wamena)
1.2 Children's Pythons
1.2 Cay Caulker Boas
1.2 Black Fuli House Snakes
1.0.4 Amazon Tree Boas (1x tiger, 3x halloween garden, 1x garden)

LOL! No doubt. Whenever the kids are cleaning up and they run across a stray magazine: "Mom...where do I put this?" ... "Put it in the bathroom!"

We subscribe to Reptiles magazine. True, a lot of the articles in it are about things you don't keep, but most of it is interesting nonetheless. The International Fauna Society publishes "Fauna" magazine which comes out 4 times a year and is pretty expensive at $14 an issue (with subscription). They also publish "The Keeper" which is a monthly newspaper publication. You can find back issues in pdf format on the website www.faunasociety.org
