    Wild corn snake

Hey everybody, I recently caught a wild baby corn snake. I was wandering how to tame it and keep ot as my own.

Do you have a picture of this corn snake? There are a lot of other wild snakes that resemble corn snakes...

What state are you in? That looks like an eastern milk snake to me...but they are so similar it's hard to tell from that picture.

    Re: Wild corn snake

First, snakes can't be tamed or domesticated in the sense that other pets can. They remain relatively "wild" for live, and only grow accustomed to humans over time.

Secondly, regardless of species, please please PLEASE return that snake to the wild. Wild animals should stay wild! Not to mention wild-caught snakes may be full of mites and other parasites. Captive bred animals are healthier and are already accustomed to a captive lifestyle from birth. Captive bred corn snakes are very inexpensive and come in a wide variety of beautiful colors!

On top of that, many states have regulations about the capture of native wildlife. Are you sure it's legal to keep a wild-caught snake in your state?

Based on your photo and because you're asking how to keep it, I'm assuming you are in no way prepared to keep a pet snake right this moment. I'm guessing you probably don't know proper husbandry techniques or what a corn snake needs to be healthy (hence why you're asking). It's good for you to ask... but you're adding undue stress to the poor snake by keeping it in improper conditions while you figure things out.

PLEASE let the wild snake go. Do research into proper husbandry for a corn snake. Only when you're ready and have your full set-up prepared in advance, THEN go find yourself a snake through a reputable breeder.

Edit: Sorry, I may have gotten on a soap box here. Been a long day.

I would be worried of passing something to your other snakes. I hope this snake is quarantined far from your collection.

Risk vs. Reward is just not worth it for me to take such a chance. I say return it and buy you one if you really want one. Like stated above they are on the cheap end as snakes go plus depending on your local laws many native snakes are illegal to catch and keep without proper permits.

    Re: Wild corn snake

I apologize for assuming you weren't ready to keep a snake. I know you mean well, but the previous arguments still stand. It's never going to be more or less "used to you" or "tame" than any other snake. Is it even legal to keep it? What if it infects your other snakes with mites and parasites? The risks just aren't worth it.

(On top of that, I agree with Skittles that it looks like a milk snake, not a corn snake)

Check your local bylaws. Some areas it can be illegal to remove native species from the wild and can come with a pretty hefty fine.

    Re: Wild corn snake

The only reason to keep/catch/buy wc (wild caught) animals is if they aren't readily available as cb. For example scrubs, good luck finding Cbb scrubs of any kind. In those cases wc are basically your only option if you wanna work with them. With how prevalent and cheap Cbb corns are why keep a wc one? Just let it go.
