Yes they can be aggressive. I have a male Aru who is very easy to handle during the day but at night there is a switch flipped and anything that enters the cage gets tagged. He can also be fussy when in shed.
I previously had a very young Biak who was a terror. She lived to bite me. Most will say that the Biaks are the most temperamental and the Aru is the least.
The only real way you will have a good idea of what you are getting is by getting a sub adult or even better an adult.
I bought a PVC cage from http://pvccages.com/ and love it but its not exactly cheap. It is very well made and very sturdy. I plan on adding another gtp and a amazon tree boa or two to my collection and I will use these cages when the time comes.
I'm not sure what tub size you will need but can tell you that a young gtp is usually kept in a 12"*12* cube style enclosure. Adult females do well in cages around 36"*18-24"*20-24" while males can do that or a tad smaller in a two foot cube.
