    Pied to normal odds?

    So I really want to get a pied ball, and I want to breed, and I already have an almost breeding size female for it. I'm just wondering what the odds would be of getting a pied out of a pied×normal clutch. It would also be her first clutch, but the pied I'm interested in is a proven breeder. Also would the odds be the same if I replaced the pied with a pinstripe?

    Pied x normal will give you all 100% het pieds, but no visuals. Pied x pin will give you 1/2 pinstripes het pied and 1/2 het pieds. If you want to produce pieds both parents must carry the pied gene. Check out http://www.worldofballpythons.com/wizard/ to answer all your breeding outcome questions quickly and easily.

    Pied is a recessive gene. This means it takes two copies, one from each parent, to reproduce a visual pied. If only one animal is a visual example of the morph, and the other is not carrying the gene, the offspring will get one copy of the gene from the visual parent and no copy from the other. When you breed a Normal to a Pied you will not get any visual Pieds but instead you will get all snakes that look normal. However, each one will be carrying the one copy of the gene from the visual parent.

    Now if you grow the offspring up and breed them with another visual Pied, then the odds for each egg are 50/50 for being a visual pied or a non visual snake carrying the pied gene. The reason it is 50/50 is because a Normal het Pied snake carrying only one copy of the Pied gene, could pass the pied gene or it could pass the copy of the normal gene. While the visual Pied will always pass the pied gene as it contains two copies. The eggs that get a copy of the Pied gene from both parents will be visual Pied snakes. The Babies that catch the normal gene from the Het Pied and the Pied gene from the visual parent, will all be non visual but het for Pied.

    pin is visual in the het form, so you will be able to visually see if they are pin or not. you have a 50/50 chance to get a pin.

    Pinstripe is considered to be a dominant pigmentation allele. Homozygous dominant for pinstripe appears to be embryonic lethal as it seem that nobody has been able to generate a "super pinstripe" as we would expect if the pinstripe gene were incomplete dominant (co-dominant in ball python land). I've also not heard of anyone generating a pinstripe that when bred to a normal produced only pinstripe offspring (as would be expected if there was a homozygous pinstripe animal that had no difference in phenotype between the heterozygous and homozygous animals).

    If you have one pinstripe, each baby has an equal chance of being pinstripe or normal for the pinstripe gene.

    I just wanted to break it down for him that 1/2 of the het pieds would also be pinstripes.
