We have a couple of CB garters and they're a hoot to watch in their enclosures, I just wish they were as chill as the wild one you found! Something I noticed is that toward the end of a shed cycle, after their eyes clear up but before they shed, they can get very dark like the one you found. Once they shed they almost look like a different snake.
