    Peter Kahl Reptiles, Feedback?

    Hello all!
Peter Kahl reptiles is listed as a possible vendor at the show I'll be attending this weekend and I was wondering what everyone's experiences are with him. I know he's a "big name" breeder, but is the quality of his animals and pricing fair? I'm particularly interested in his boas, but if you have feedback on his BPs, please feel free to comment too.

    Thanks!

I dont think this should even have to be asked. Peter Kahl isnt a big time breeder... in the boa world there is no one I can think of held in higher esteem.

Oh yeah BPs as well...First Breeder

I'm going to throw my experience with Peter Kahl out there and you can judge whether or not you want to do business with him.

Back in 2011, I purchased a female candy ball python from Peter. This was prior to the albino compatibility being publicly revealed by Garrick DeMeyer. Through evidence obtained by the BLBC community, it was discovered that Peter Kahl knew about this compatibility prior to my purchase. He withheld that information from me when he gladly accepted my money, knowing that once that information was public, it would have a drastic affect on the value of the project.

Funny enough, after my purchase and prior to the public unveiling of the albino compatibility, I heard a rumor that the candy gene was compatible with the lavender albino gene. I emailed Peter about that and he replied back strongly emphasizing the fact that they weren't compatible, that he knew someone who did it and got double hets, and he even went so far as to sending me comparison pictures of a lav and a candy. Not a peep about the albino compatibility he knew full well about though.

I contacted Peter after the information was revealed hoping for an explanation at the very least and some sort of compensation due to him withholding that information at best. It took me weeks, if not months (I can't recall the exact length of time) to get Pete to simply send me a guarantee that my female was a pure candy and not a candino. The best I got was a scanned copy of my invoice with a guarantee written on that.

So, essentially, at least back in 2011-2012, Peter Kahl was okay with taking money from people for high end projects he knew had issues that might concern potential buyers and he withheld sharing those issues.

As far as his animals go, I purchased a pied and the above mentioned candy from him near the same period of time. Both animals arrived in perfect condition and have been healthy. The pied is a poor eater, as pieds are prone to be, but the candy has given me clutches two years in a row.

Being a known name and being someone who is great to buy from are not always the same thing. They can be, but not always. Just throwing that out there.

The only comment I can personally contribute is that he has some kids (his own?) selling his snakes for him. They produced a couple of very unprofessional videos and advertisements for the animals that I personally would be weary of. There was not a professional polish on any of these ads or videos and if I were a well-known name in the industry like Pete Kahl, I would control such sprawl. It could be indicative of sloppy operations - it at least gives that impression to the public. Again, ENTIRELY SPECULATION - just a thought.

Thanks for your input! Considering the info you gave, it sounds like I'd be safe buying from him health-wise.. I am not looking for investment quality, only a pastel, jungle, or combo of the two.. So if his prices are fair and the animals seem healthy, it might be worth a go. I never thought to seek him out to purchase from because I assumed all his animals would be out of my price range but with him coming to the show, it can't hurt to look.

MrLang- I get the general impression that he's very behind technology wise.. His lack of a website and unorganized web presence lead me to think so. I haven't seen the videos you mentioned. Are they on YouTube under "peter kahl reptiles"?

Communication was poor. The snake's quality was great! I would not buy from him over the phone or on the internet again but wouldn't hesitate to buy in person. Just my experience.

Well... After getting myself all psyched up about seeing my first "big name" in person, he wasn't even at the show. At least he wasn't there yesterday. He may be coming today, but we live about 2 hrs. from the show site so I won't be going back today. I ended up getting a hypo from someone else, but maybe one day I'll see him at a show and get to buy from him.

T&C Exotics- Thanks for the link. When I go to it, it says "website under construction". Its good that he is working on a site though.

Well, he's a big name in the hobby....

...so he must be a great guy.

I mean, only the most upright, ethical businessman would be capable of getting snakes to have sex.

    Right?
