Amber has pretty much grown out of one of her hides. Its a "medium" exo-terra reptile cave, she still fits in it, but it takes some time for her to situate herself inside of it and she literally takes up every inch of the inside of it. Its even kinda cute when you see her moving the hide around, her head peeks out the bottom, all trying to fit inside.
So the question is, do they feel more secure when they are in a tight space or do they prefer to have a little bit of room to shift around? I'm of course going to have to get the larger size soon, but I was just wondering if anyone has been more successful with spacious hides or smaller tighter hides.

Like so much else, it will depend on the snake, but mine usually seem to say, "the tighter the better."

well a tight fit is one thing but if the snake is lifting the hide up off the enclosure floor, it's definitely way too small. they can be snug and still have plenty of room.

haha i asked if they prefer like you'd converse with them or something, lol.
Every snake I've seen seems to have a favorite hide. Amber likes the repticave but she just barely fits in it.
A friend of mine has a bp that uses a towel instead of a hide. We took it out one time, and the snake just curled up in the corner. Put the towel back in, and in he went.

Jojo used to have one just like that one and he looked so funny trying to fit under it. It seemed like he was wearing it like a hat instead of a hide. He would lift the entire hide off the ground and he would stick out all around it.
I bought a large exoterra cave and he loves it. He also has a tiny litter pan that i turned upside down and cut a hole in the side and he loves that one too. Its all about comfort i guess.
Thanks,
Damien

Has anyone seen a BP get stuck in a hide that is too small? I seriously think mine is wedging himself in the small hut so tightly that he can't uncoil or lift it off him. I fed him on Friday, didn't see him out at all until I held him on Monday, and when I put his face next to the water he was so parched he drank for a good 60 seconds. I used to see him crusing around constantly when its dark.

A few of my bp's!
a hide should be snug enough so that they feel secure. if it it isn't snug enough, they won't use it, but it sounds too me like you guys are using hides that are WAY too small.

lol, my new BP Bones has three hides. Two of which are medium, and one small one (coconut half). He is always scrunched in the coconut half! He doesnt like the two nice hides I bought him.
ANYWAY
I picked up that hide one day and didnt see him. I was shocked! Did he escape???? I looked around franticly. Not in the other hides... not under the substrate...
I picked up the coconut hide again and he was sticking to it. lol
I aughta go do shows on the street. Get people to bet on which coconut has the snake under it. I would win every time...

Why I love Ball Pythons.
LOL....My gopher snake, Caesar, does the same thing in his little cave-hide. He wedges himself into it so that when you pick it up, he goes up with it. I've learned to give it a tiny little wiggle as I pick it up and he gets a slightly disgruntled expression when he plops out! I would think that hide has become too small for him, but he seems to still fit just fine...but it's pretty amusing watching him stuff nearly three feet of snake into that tiny little cave...it's like watching a dozen clowns cram into toy car!
