breeding possible hets

When you have a possible het female do you breed her as soon as you can and risk not proving her out because of fewer eggs or wait until she is bigger so she can produce more eggs.

i mean, its a decision between something like 4 eggs now and 6 eggs in one year, or no eggs now and 6 eggs in one year. so why wait?

Because that isn't the reality of the option posited.

The real options are breeding her before she can definitely lay successfully and recover easily for certain, and possibly stunting her growth over the next year, to produce a small clutch of eggs ( that reduce your odds of proving her out) over the next two year period. If she doesn't get her weight back on she should really be given the next year off.

And that is best case scenario compared to her either slugging out or having complications which might result in her never being safe to breed again.

You can still miss proving out a genuine het no matter the size of the clutch but letting her get up to the required weight and age means that you should get more eggs in the same three year period with less risk to the animal.

i didnt suggest breeding any females before they are ready.

when they are ready they are ready, my question is: why on earth would you wait longer than you would otherwise, just because its a possible het?

I don't think they will breed if they aren't ready? In the wild they breed when they are ready and don't breed when they aren't. I think nature will work out on it's own because that's how they were created. But it doesn't harm to hold them back until you think it's safe. That's just my opinion.
