    BRB Looks at me funny

I've had many BP's of all ages and still do, but I recently got a Brazilian Rainbow Boa. When I reach in to pick him up, his head always comes toward my hand like he might bite (he never does). Also, when I'm holding him, he seems to come toward my face and kind of "stares" at me. Is this just a Boa thing vs a BP thing? When I pick up my BP's, they don't normally stick their head toward my hand and if anything, may bury it in a ball till they get used to being out.
It's not a big deal and I'm not scared or anything, just curious since this is my first Boa.

It's normal, mine do it as well. They tend to be more curious and less defensive than BP's. Also, they have very strong food responses, so when you put your hand in he may also be checking to see if you're edible.

My babies started off nippy but after several days of letting them wear themselves out on the back of my hand, they've settled into just "tasting" my hand when I reach into the tub.

I think it's just a boa thing. My RTB does it too. They're just more curious than BP's

Even one of my two BPs invariably moves up toward my face and checks me out when he's first brought out or picked up. Doesn't check my hand out in the cage beyond maybe poking his nose out of his hide, but either way I don't think it's something I'd worry about.

Yup, all my boas do this except one of them, infact, my anaconda loves to stick her head out and look at me begging me to take her out lol.

I think it's fairly common, and semi arboreal snakes tend to go up. Our royal likes to go down. It's pretty fun having them (boas) come check you out. I will say once they get larger, remember your face area gives off heat and a lot of spent O2 and they may cue in on you because of that.

The "stare down" game is not a good idea with a bigger snake LOL! I let them climb up to come visit but redirect the head so it's not directly in my face.

There are a great many differences you'll see moving from royals to boas.

Enjoy your snake, it sounds like a fun one!

Re: BRB Looks at me funny

Thanks for the replies, I do enjoy the BRB. I took him outside in the sun the other day and the colors are amazing. You can see the colors ok in artificial light, but they really come out in the sun.
On another note, someone mentioned them being semi-arboreal. I do have some limbs for him to climb on, but he never really does. If anything, sometime he burrows in the cypress. My BP's seem to climb more than he does.

This is a snake thing. Some do it some don't. It isn't just certain species that do it. Some brbs will, some won't. Some carpets, will some won't. Etc. Even some bps will.
