All I can say is yikes o_O
I can understand that it costs alot to properly ship a living creature from one place to another and to assure it arrives alive and well, but everyone I check has different shipping prices o_O
Alex Hue being the cheapest with $35 shipping + $10 handling = $45
East Bay Viviarium being the second cheapest being at least $40 shipping + $15 handling = $55
And Nerd being the most expensive, as much as $65.
All of these being more expensive then the snake itself!

Yep. Overnight is the crunch - plus what it takes to beef up the boxes (heatpacks, insulation, styro, reinforced). Some places have expensive boxes cutom made and pimped out with screenprinting too which def tacks it up a notch. I'd hate to see it go the way of ebay and have folks profit from shipping.

Oh, don't even get me started on ebay. I'm so sick of seeing items worth about $20 at the store, that you can win on ebay for about $10 and then pay another $10 shipping. Ha forget that, I'll drive to the store and get it now.

Alk...whereabouts are you located? You can look for a local herp show/expo to come near your area and that would be an excellent place to buy a bp. You get to hand-pick the one you want...talk extensively with the breeder about your choices...and NO shipping charges. Even if you have to drive a couple hours to get to one...it'd be worth it. Not to mention the enjoyment of seeing a huge variety of awesome herps up close and personal.

Reptile shows are a great way to go. If that's not an option, look at it this way, I would rather get a healthy snake from a reputable breeder and pay the shipping charge than get a snake of questionable health from a pet store which will probably charge about the same amount as the breeder will charge for the snake and the shipping combined anyway.

I was thinking about going to a show to get it but, the nearest one to me is a 3 hour drive away and its not until July 18th >_<

Well, if that's too long to wait and drive (I wouldn't mind the drive myself, but I can relate to not wanting to wait that long) Smynx had a good point...that if you buy from a reasonably priced breeder (like Alex Hue) and have to pay for shipping, you'll be paying the same or only a little bit more than you would pay in an over-priced local petstore. A little extra $$ is definitely worth the peace of mind in being able to trust the source of your snake...in my opinion.

Hello All,
I typically like to ship via Delta DASH because they knowingly take live animals and they arrive within a few hours. The package is placed in a climate controlled room during the wait for the plane and in a climate controlled, pressuriezed cargo hold during flight. This is usually about $75.00 for same day shipping. When you are paying a large sum for a snake, (albino, het-albino, pastel, etc.) then you are willing to pay for more reliable shipping.
I have also used FedEx for $35.00 (I don't add a box charge) but I cannot guarantee live arrival. They do not accept live animals and would refuse the package if I told them what was inside. So the package is put on an unpressurized, non-climate controlled hold in their plane and hopefully the snake arrives alive. It gets very cold up there at 30,000 feet (how high do planes fly?) Reptiles are usually able to withstand this, but it is stressful. Most people have no problem shipping this way, but I definitely prefer to use the airlines. Of course, when the snake is only $25-$50 it is hard to swallow an additional $75 for shipping. But for those that are interested, it costs a heck of a lot more than $75 for shipping a live mammal such as a dog. You definitely couldn't ship a dog through FedEx!
Just my thoughts,

Hillary, you may be aware of this already, but there was a long running thread over on faunaclassifieds.com about getting certified to ship reptiles on FedEx. It seems they had a contact and were trying to make it easier to do. You might want to look it up if you haven't already.
