My understanding is that during the shed process there are two layers of skin,
in between them is a layer of oil, by soaking him your removing the oils causing dry or stuck sheds.

This is my understanding as well.

One thing that often works well that I haven't seen mentioned yet is to offer a humid hide once you see him go blue.
