That male kept shaking his tale like he's a rattle snake. Is that normal for king snakes? Or maybe they learn that technique to make predators think they are more dangerous than they are. That is very cool if they did. Let me know if I am way off base.

It's normal Kingsnake behavior for exactly the reason you said - it's to keep predators at bay. It's basically a defensive sort of thing.

A lot of colubrids will rattle like that. I see it all the time in rat snakes, kingsnakes and gopher/bull snakes. It's kind of funny when you're holding onto a newly hatched baby in one hand while it's rattling it's tail and striking at your other hand.

Really neat! I'll be curious to hear how you like them compared to your other animals.

I just scored a coastal/jungle carpet python 3 days ago. I was looking at Eastern and Brooks kings very hard. They are probably the last snake on my "gotta have" list.

You should keep this thread on your mind and do a progression as the age.

I only have the king and a bp, however i am snake sitting a desert king and a western hognose for the summer for a friend of my wife who is a teacher and is away taking classes while school is out. Colubrids eat, eat, eat, and eat some more! But that is part of what is cool about them. I am jelous that u have a carpet, i want one( i can not decide which one) but it was all i could do with the wife to get a second snake. But i have not given up, and work to expand the collection.

Well, I know the feeling about the wifey not being keen on more. I have a beautiful boa constrictor and the new coastal/jungle. My son has the royal.

So, let me know how you feel the Brooks compares to the royal. I like the fact they are feeding machines.

My carpet is being picky right now so I'm slightly annoyed because our royal had that market cornered until she went live.

If I could do 2 more, I'd get a Brooks or Eastern King and some type of BCC.

I think you'll be VERY happy with the Brooksi.

    Re: New Brooks King Snakes

My brooks is still quite young, I think he will be a year old in August. I work a 48 shift for the FD, so I try to interact with him as much as I can because when I don't hold him for a few days he at first acts flighty and will rattle his tail. He does calm down almost instantly after I pick him up. He seems so far to be somewhat curious but will not pass up the opportunity to hide but i think that maybe due to him being still young.
As for the ball that i have, she is just over 1000g and I have had her about 2 years now. She can be alittle shy sometimes but she acts like a normal bp i guess. She does go off feed from usually Oct. To March. This year though her feeding repsonse has really picked up. I feed her yesteray and she met me at the door when she saw that i had the rat. I thought she was about to tear the sliding door open to get the rat. Lol
The brooks was fed his first fuzzy yesterday as well. At fiest i thought the fuzzy was too big for him. He rapped around it, and started looking for it, bit himself, then finally found it and ate it. He then had his look of " i want more" that he does even though he had a nice size lump in his belly lol.
They both are cool but it is nice to have the more active king. I think when he gets older, he will not hide so mush in his enclosure as he does now.
As for more snakes, i have a short list of what i think i could handle based on my work schedule, interacting with them and taking care of all of them. We held a red tail boa at the pet store the other day and my wife thought she was cool on how she acted and how smooth she felt. She did not like the fact of how big a red tail can get. I hope to get maybe a corn or even a dumeril boa next if i can.
Sorry for the long post lol
