I have my adult male in a divided T8 and I can say he uses all the space some of the time. That is to say when he's hungry he's all over. When he's thirsty he goes for a drink. That being said he is mostly in his hides but he's shown a preference for opaque hides so I still see him just blurrier!

My hatchling female is in a 10 gallon tank until quarantine ends and she uses all the space a lot and doesn't really seem to concerned with ever using her hides but her tank is packed with waded paper too so she feels more secure.
