Terra cotta pot hide
We cut a hole in two flower terra cotta pots for new hides. I bought the plastic ones but half her body was out because it wasn't heavy enough. However, she is either checking things out a lot or does not like these new hides. It is night time so I'm just going to have to see where she is in the morning.
Did I make a bad call? Thoughts?

It's hard to say. Since snakes are slithering muscle, it's pretty easy for them to to move plastic. On the other hand, they will hide annnyywheeere!

With terra cotta ones you need to make sure that there is no sharp edges since you cut them.
Plastic ones are fine even if they are not heavy snake with plastic hides will often move them around as they pleased which is a non issue same for their body handing half way out of them.

My one pied girl is pretty much a snail with her hide, she can fit all the way in but chooses not too. Her head out the front Tail out the back, and moves around with it.

My adults only have one hide in their tubs. On feeding day I move it onto the heat tape at the back of the tub. It usually stays there for the next 2-3 days, and then it slowly migrates toward the front of the tub.

LOL That would be SO FUNNY!
As for the hides, OP, as long as they are clean (and toxin-free) and sanded down if altered, I don't see why you can't try them! Cheap is my favourite price, next to free.
Most of the time my snakes prefer the cheap hides to the expensive store-bought ones anyway...
But, I do spoil them. The ball python has 4 hides in his vive and the corn has 6. I clutter the crap out of their vives! I love watching them explore. The more stuff I put in, the more they come out.

these hides should be just fine if you sand down sharp edges.
one thing to consider: after they got burned they are extremely dry, and they are sold that way because of the reduced weight. but they are so dry that your tongue would stick to it instantly, and it might mess with the humidity. so with terracotta its always a good idea to give the stuff a soak before first using it. apart from that, terracotta should be completely non-toxic.
for cleaning, i guess i would just use water, and boiling water if disinfection is needed, the stuff is porous so when you use liquid soap or bleach or anything, it could stay in there for quite a while.
since you can soak this material and it holds some water, it might be great for making a humid hide, or help with the humidity in general.
