It's also a fact that heatmats won't increase ambient temps much so measuring the surface temps of the tub and under the hides can give a truer reading.
I thoroughly recommend a temp gun - it's probably the most used piece of snake keeping paraphernalia I own.
Plus if you get one with a laser you can use it to drive cats nuts.
