Two years ago I moved form Phoenix to St. Louis with nine snakes.
-A decent sized Styrofoam cooler.
-Individual Pillow Cases (Really cheap at Goodwill, but please wash first)
-Some hot hands (taped to the lid)
-A thermometer/temp gauge.
Stuck them in there and kept the temps reasonable. Everyone was fine.

You suggested the cooler and pillow case route.
I bought a smaller Styrofoam cooler today because only 1 snake will be in it.
Are those types of coolers air tight, or do they get enough ventilation?
Don't want to suffocate the snake.
